Step 1 is to acknowledge that you have sinned.

Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"

Step 2 is to realize that there is a penalty for your sin.

Romans 6:23a says, "For the wages of sin (is) death;"

Step 3 is to acknowledge that Christ paid the penalty of sin for you.

Romans 5:8 says, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Step 4 is to acknowledge that Christ wants to give you the free gift of eternal life.

Romans 6:23b says, "... but the gift of God (is) eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Step 5 is that you must believe in Christ and ask Him to be your Savior.

Romans 10:9,10 says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Romans 10:13 says, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
